CENTERVILLE, Mass. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference Lacrosse League has announced its first weekly awards for 2012, for the period ending Sunday. For the first time ever, the ECAC will be recognizing a specialist of the week. This week’s recipients – pictured left to right, Ohio State’s Logan Schuss, Loyola Maryland’s Scott Ratliff , Denver’s Wes Berg and Fairfield’s Michael Roe – are:
Offensive
Player of the Week
Logan Schuss, Ohio State, Attack, Junior,
Ladner, British Columbia/Delta Secondary
Schuss led the Buckeyes to a 10-9 upset of No. 5-ranked Denver Sunday in Jacksonville, Fla., with five goals. Four of his five goals tied the score or put Ohio State in the lead, including his final tally with 13 minutes and 35 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give OSU the lead for good at 9-8. The junior attack has notched at least one point in each of his 33 collegiate games. He leads the Buckeyes with 15 points and 10 goals this season, reaching 123 career points to rank 20th in Ohio State history.
Defensive
Player of the Week
Scott Ratliff, Loyola Maryland, Long-Stick
Midfielder, Junior, Marietta, Ga./George Walton HS
Ratliff led the Loyola defensive and possession effort on Saturday afternoon as the Greyhounds defeated No. 19 Delaware, 13-8, to open the 2012 season. The long-stick midfielder finished with game highs of seven ground balls and two caused turnovers, and he also scored a transition goal for the Greyhounds. The junior helped Loyola overcome a 3-0 first-quarter deficit in which the Greyhounds went 0-of-4 on face-offs and the Blue Hens picked up nine ground balls to Loyola’s four. For the rest of the game, Loyola was 14-of-21 on restarts and the Greyhounds led 30-19 in ground balls, thanks in large part to Ratliff’s efforts on the ground.
Rookie of the
Week
Wes Berg, Denver, Attack, Freshman, New
Westminster, British Columbia/New Westminster HS
Freshman Wes Berg was one of three Pioneers to lead DU in scoring in its 10-9 loss to Ohio State in the Moe’s Southwest Grill Classic on Sunday afternoon.
