Michigan Starts First Varsity Season on Saturday against Denison in Exhibition Contest

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Saturday's game won't count in the standings or official statistics, but the University of Michigan men's lacrosse program will play its first varsity game at the NCAA Division I level on Saturday versus Denison University in an exhibition. The Wolverines open the season for real on Feb. 12 against Detroit Mercy.

Men's lacrosse became the 28th varsity sport at the University of Michigan on May 25, 2011. (Women's lacrosse also was announced then.) The last time U-M added varsity sports was during the 2000-01 school year, when men's soccer and women's water polo commenced play.

There are 61 NCAA Division I men's lacrosse programs spread over eight conferences. The Wolverines are affiliate members of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) in 2012 and achieve full-fledged status in 2013. The ECAC announced the addition of U-M as the league's eighth member last July: http://ecaclacrosse.com/2012/news/Michigan_Joins_ECAC_Lacrosse
