He played in a career-high 14 games a year ago, scoring three goals and recording 12 groundballs. Smail is an Academic All-Big Ten selection and an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete.
Kawamoto, from Springfield, Va., is a redshirt senior defenseman who was the 2011 Eastern College Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year, a first team all-conference pick and an honorable mention All-American as a junior in 2011. A second-team All-Great Western Lacrosse League selection in 2009 before he missed most of 2010 with an injury, Kawamoto has played in 47 games at Ohio State and has 63 groundballs and 29 caused turnovers.
Bonanni, a native of Harwood, Md., was a 2011 Second Team All-ECAC selection and the co-recipient of the Ohio State program’s Bice Unsung Hero award for 2011. An Academic All-Big Ten and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete honoree, he has played in 40 games and has 40 groundballs, along with 24 caused turnovers.
On Sunday, Oct. 9, Ohio State scrimmaged North Carolina in the Fall Ball Classic at Calvert Hall College near Baltimore. Admission proceeds from the game went to the Michael R. Breschi Scholarship Fund at Ohio State, generating $8,000 from the event. A near-capacity crowd of around 4,000 enjoyed beautiful weather and entertaining lacrosse action.
The Michael R. Breschi Memorial Scholarship, one of the largest memorial endowed scholarships in the Ohio State Department of Athletics, was created in memory of Michael Breschi, the son of former Ohio State lacrosse coach Joe Breschi and his wife, Julie, who passed away tragically in March 2004 when he was just 3 years old. Breschi, a 1990 UNC graduate, coached at Ohio State from 1997-08 before returning to his alma mater in 2008.
The MRB Scholarship is given to a senior lacrosse player at Ohio State every year who best exemplifies the spirit of Michael. The recipient of the 2011-12 scholarship will be announced after the scrimmage Sunday. Previous recipients include Tom Randisi (2005), Andrew Bender (2006), Chris Li (2007), Ricky Pages (2008), Scott Matthews (2009), Scott Foreman (2010) and Scott Lathrop (2011).
The Buckeyes’ fall schedule ended with the CJD Memorial Fall Classic Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. The day featured three lacrosse games, with Ohio State taking on Ohio Wesleyan and Canisius and the Bishops and Griffins also facing off. Five dollar donations were collected at the door for the CJD Memorial Fund to help support Nationwide Children's Hospital. The fund was set up to honor the memory of Colleen Dobbins, the daughter of Coach Dobbins and his wife, Erin, who passed away unexpectedly in March.
