Three Greyhounds Earn All-America Recognition
BALTIMORE – Three Loyola University Maryland men’s
lacrosse players – senior defender Steve Layne, senior
attacker Cooper MacDonnell and junior faceoff specialist John
Schiavone – earned All-America honors from the United States
Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) on Thursday.
The trio were named to the All-America Honorable Mention list,
giving the Greyhounds three All-Americans for the first time since
2002. Loyola has placed at least one player on the All-America
teams in 26 of the last 28 seasons.
“Stephen Layne, Cooper MacDonnell and John Schiavone were
all parts of our success this year as a team,” Loyola Head
Coach Charley Toomey said. “They each played key roles in
different roles, and they are very deserving of the
honors.”
All three of the players were named to the All-ECAC First Team
earlier this month, while the All-America honors is the first of
each player’s career.
Layne was the quarterback of a Loyola defense that is currently
tied for fourth nationally in scoring defense. The Greyhounds
allowed just 111 goals in 14 games this season, an average of 7.93
per contest.
The senior co-captain led Loyola with 14 caused turnovers, while
picking up 32 ground balls. During his Loyola career, Layne caused
46 turnovers and grabbed 107 ground balls.
MacDonnell returned from an early-season shoulder injury, which
held him out for three games and half of another, to lead the team
in goals (2.0) and points (2.55) per game. He scored 22 goals and
assisted on six more during the 2010 season.
The ECAC Offensive Player of the Year as a senior, MacDonnell
scored at least one point in each of the last 28 games of his
collegiate career, a stretch that covered two-plus seasons. He
finished with 77 goals and 96 total points in 51 games over four
seasons for the Greyhounds.
Schiavone was one of the top face-off specialists in the nation
this season, winning 59.9-percent of restarts in 2010. He is sixth
nationally in face-off winning percentage and is one of only two
face-off specialists (Tim Fallon, Hartford) to earn All-America
honors from the USILA. Schiavone won 166-of-277 faceoffs and picked
up 90 ground balls, good for sixth on Loyola’s single-season
list.
Over the last 10 games of Loyola’s season, Schiavone won
64.3-percent of his restarts (126-of-196) and picked up 74 ground
balls. He earned ECAC Defensive Player of the Week honors and was
the All-ECAC First Team specialist.
The Greyhounds finished the season 9-5 and earned their third trip
to the NCAA Championships in the last four years.
