Basler, Dircks, Hagelin & Langan Named 2011 Loyola Captains
BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland Head Men’s
Lacrosse Coach Charley Toomey announced today that graduate student
Chris Basler and seniors Steve Dircks, Jake Hagelin and Matt Langan
have been named captains for the 2011 season.
The foursome was elected by a vote of their teammates.
“These four young men have represented Loyola with
character, integrity and class for four years,” Toomey said.
“We are excited to have them lead the men’s lacrosse
program in 2011.”
Basler (Seaford, N.Y./Holy Trinity H.S.) has been a key member of
Loyola’s midfield unit for the past three seasons, starting
last year on the Greyhounds’ first midfield. Despite missing
the first three games of the 2010 season with an injury, Basler
tallied eight assists and two goals, and he has scored 12 goals and
assisted on 21 in his career. He graduated last May with a bachelor
of arts degree in business and is currently in graduate school at
Loyola.
Dircks (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) was an All-ECAC
Second Team member in 2008 as a starting defender before missing
the 2009 season with a knee injury. He returned to the field last
year as a starter and helped bolster a defense that gave up just
7.93 goals per game, the third-best mark in NCAA Division I last
season. Dicks, an accounting major, had a career-high 34 ground
balls and 11 caused turnovers as a junior in 2010.
Hagelin (Havre de Grace, Md./Boys’ Latin School) has been a
starter in goal for the Greyhounds since coming to Loyola in 2008.
He has played more than 2,260 minutes between the pipes and has
recorded a goals against average of 8.09 during his career. Last
year, he earned ECAC Goalkeeper of the Year honors and was an
All-ECAC First Team honoree. Hagelin, a communications major, was
eighth in NCAA Division I last year with an 8.24 goals against
average.
Langan (Madison, N.J./Madison H.S.) led the Greyhounds with 18
assists while finishing second on the squad with 34 points, a total
good for 10th in the ECAC. He had two or more points in nine of
Loyola’s games last season while starting all 14 on attack.
In his four-year career at Loyola, Langan, a communications major,
has scored 36 goals and assisted on 29 for a total of 65
points.
The Greyhounds open the 2011 season at Ridley Athletic Complex on
Saturday, February 19, when they host the U.S. Naval Academy.
