BALTIMORE – Three Loyola University Maryland men’s
lacrosse players were named to the Thunder Bay/Inside
Lacrosse Team of the Week on Tuesday after the Greyhounds
defeated then-No. 9 Georgetown, 11-6, last Saturday.
Goalkeeper Jake Hagelin, face-off midfielder John Schiavone and
attacker Cooper MacDonnell earned the honor after helping Loyola
win matchups in all facets of the game. The victory pushed the
Greyhounds’ 2010 record to 8-2 and boosted them to No. 7 in
both national polls, the USILA Coaches and Nike/Inside
Lacrosse Media Rankings.
Hagelin and MacDonnell were named ECAC Defensive and Co-Offensive
Players of the Week, respectively, on Monday.
Hagelin made 14 saves in goal for Loyola, marking the
fourth-straight game he’s posted 13 or more saves. He moved
into the top spot nationally in goals against average (6.69) and is
third in saves percentage (.619). He has helped the
Greyhounds’ defense take the No. 1 position in the national
statistics in scoring defense.
MacDonnell scored four points in the game, tallying three games
and an assist. Despite missing three games to a shoulder injury
this season, MacDonnell leads the ECAC in goals per game and is
second in points per game. He has scored 19 goals and has four
assists this season.
Schiavone continued his outstanding play at the face-off
‘X’ with a 15-of-20 performance against the Hoyas. His
.750 winning percentage was his second-best mark of the season, and
he also tied for team-high honors with six ground balls. Schiavone
and the Greyhounds’ face-off unit moved up to third in the
NCAA rankings in winning percentage (.593).
Loyola moves back into ECAC Lacrosse League action this Saturday,
April 24, with a 1 p.m. game at Hobart in Geneva, N.Y.
