BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse team
will play six home games in its new facility, the Ridley
Intercollegiate Athletic Complex, beginning with a Saturday, March
13, date against Duke.
The Greyhounds and Blue Devils will play the first men's lacrosse
game at the complex that will be the home for Loyola men's and
women's lacrosse and soccer.
"This is an exciting year for our program with opening a new
stadium that seats approximately 6,000 fans," Loyola Head Coach
Charley Toomey said. "We are also playing six new opponents on our
schedule. We look forward to a very competitive ECAC schedule. In
the past several years, we have had one of the top 10 strongest
schedules in the nation, and we think we have that again. Our guys
like playing the toughest competition."
Loyola, which has won at least a share of the last two ECAC
Championships, opens its 2010 campaign on Saturday, February 20, in
Annapolis, Md., against the U.S. Naval Academy. The Greyhounds and
Midshipmen have not played since a 19-8 Loyola victory in the 1993
NCAA Tournament, and the teams will play for the first time during
the regular-season since 1943.
The Greyhounds will make a quick entry into conference action,
when they travel to Hamden, Conn., to meet first-year ECAC member
Quinnipiac on Saturday, February 27. Loyola then heads to
Louisville, Ky., to play its second conference game, at Bellarmine,
on Wednesday, March 3.
Loyola has a 22-6 record in ECAC action during Toomey's four years
as head coach.
Loyola, a team that has made two of the last three NCAA
Tournaments, returns to Charm City and will play its first-ever
game at M&T Bank Stadium, home of the Baltimore Ravens, when it
takes on Notre Dame on Saturday, March 6, in the Inside
Lacrosse Konica/Minolta Face-Off Classic. The game is the
first of two the Greyhounds will play in a National Football League
stadium during 2010.
The contest against Duke starts a four-game homestand, including a
pair of ECAC matches.
Loyola hosts new ECAC member Air Force on Saturday, March 20,
followed by a Saturday, March 27, date against local foe Towson.
The Greyhounds wrap-up their four-week home stretch with a
Saturday, April 3, game versus Ohio State.
The Greyhounds head to Fairfield, Conn., for a conference game at
Fairfield on Saturday, April 10. Loyola returns to the Ridley
Intercollegiate Athletic Complex on Saturday, April 17, to take on
Georgetown.
A pair of road contests - Saturday, April 24, at Hobart, and
Sunday, May 2, at Denver - wrap-up ECAC action for the
Greyhounds.
The game against Denver will be played at Invesco Field, home of
the NFL's Denver Broncos.
The regular-season culminates on Saturday, May 8, with Loyola's
annual date with Johns Hopkins.
Loyola's television schedule will be announced in the coming
weeks.
The NCAA Tournament begins on Saturday and Sunday, May 15 and 16,
with games at campus sites and wraps up with the Final Four at
M&T Bank Stadium, Saturday and Monday, May 29 and 31.
