Hobart Sports Information
GENEVA, N.Y.-Hobart College lacrosse head coach Matt Kerwick '90 announced that seniors Nick Currie (Corning East/Corning, N.Y.), Rafe Mattingly (Rush-Henrietta/Henrietta, N.Y.), Sean Murphy (Bishop Timon-St. Jude/Buffalo, N.Y.), and Dan Spinella (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.) will serve as team captains for the 2008 season.
Currie scored 17 goals, including four extra-man goals, and set up five more last season. A two-year starter who is projected to run on Hobart's top midfield line again this season, he has 36 goals and 14 assists in 37 career games.
Mattingly is the Statesmen's top one-on-one defender. Like Currie, he is a two-year starter and will serve as the keystone for Hobart's close defense this season.
One of Currie's line mates, Murphy served as a team captain last season as well, when he scored 13 times and handed out five assists. In 42 career games, Murphy has 34 goals, 13 assists, and 68 ground balls.
One of the top faceoff specialists in the nation, Spinella won 51.7 percent of the faceoffs he took last season and was named to the preseason All-ECAC team by Face-Off Yearbook. As a sophomore, Spinella set a Hobart Division I season record for faceoff winning percentage (61.8) and boasts a 54.0 career winning percentage to go with 71 ground balls.
Hobart begins its 106th season on Feb. 23, when the Statesmen take on the No. 15 Bucknell Bison in Baltimore. Faceoff at Boys' Latin School is scheduled for 1 p.m. WEOS-FM (89.7/90.3) will once again cover every Hobart game this season, across the airwaves and online.
